Living in at uni is a very exciting time. You’re thrown in with a whole new bunch of people and it’s no doubt many of them will become your life long friends. Whether you’re new to university or you’re looking forward to moving into your new accommodation in September, you’re no doubt aware that with lots of different personalities and lifestyles coming together, getting along can sometimes be a tricky task.

Keeping the Peace…

Lots of people enjoy a night out at uni, however, remember that not everybody wants the nightclub lifestyle. Whilst you may be wanting to turn up the music and get ready to go out, someone else may be wanting a more relaxed evening. Nobody is expecting complete silence in uni accommodation, but just be pleasant to those around you.

Communication…

Communication is key for university housing. Make sure that you have some form of communication between everybody in the accommodation, whether this be a group chat or something else, it is important that you have some way to talk to each other. This opens up informal and usually more friendly methods of discussing issues or reminders. If you have something you want to discuss with your flatmates, then usually face to face is the safest option, this rules out any opportunity of people misreading your messages.

Respect…

When being put in accommodation with usually six or more different people, from different backgrounds and personalities, it is not expected that you have to be best friends with everyone. However, whilst you may not get along with certain people, or not be as close with them, remember to respect them and be kind to them. You have to live with these people for a whole year, so it is important to be kind in order to make the year as smooth as possible.

Engage with each other…

On the other hand, you might get along with most people in your accommodation! Make sure that in between your busy schedules you make time for each other, as these people will most likely be your best friends by the end of your third year at uni (this sounds like a cliché but I can tell you this is true from my own experience!). There are many things you can do to make the most of your time at uni together, and here are just a few suggestions:

  • Board Game Nights
  • Homemade Pizza Night
  • Cocktail / Mock-tail Masterclass
  • Come Dine with Me Competition
  • Trip to the seaside (Southport)
  • Meals Out
  • Hit the town for some casual drinks
  • Fajita Night
  • Trips to the city (Liverpool is great for shopping and it has lots of activities for you and your friends to take part in!)

Most importantly, have fun!

Whilst there is a lot to remember in terms of accommodation etiquette, the most important thing is that you enjoy yourself! Your three years at uni will fly by, and it’s important that you make the most of your time there.

Living with McComb has really enhanced my experience of student housing. The accommodation is of a high standard and the team at McComb HQ are very friendly and welcoming. Living with McComb takes the stress off of the housing side and really let’s you make the most of the university experience.
