Hopefully, the “Beast from the East” is now behind us, and the weather is getting back to “normal” again.

However, when we are faced with these conditions, it does remind us of the need to be prepared at all times. Although winter comes as no surprise, many of us are not ready for its arrival. If you are prepared for the hazards of winter, you will be more likely to stay safe and healthy when temperatures start to fall.

Winter storms and cold temperatures can be dangerous. Stay safe and healthy by planning ahead. Prepare your food supplies, and if you have one, your car.

When planning travel (including the short distance from your McComb accommodation to the uni), be aware of current and forecasted weather conditions.

Wear appropriate outdoor clothing. This can include a tightly woven, preferably wind-resistant coat or jacket; inner layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots.

If you don’t have to travel, or if you are able to work in your accommodation (rather than at Uni), then this could be a safer option.

Don’t forget to take care when arriving at Uni, the main roads may have been gritted, but the main university car parks may not. The result can be one great skating rink. It’s often safer to leave the car at your accommodation, and take the bus.

No one can stop the onset of winter. However, if you follow these suggestions, then hopefully you’ll be well prepared. Let’s hope Spring arrives soon!!
