Moving to halls is one of the most exciting parts of University. It’s a time for making friends, enjoying the student life and finding your own feet in the adult world.

You’ll find that your new flatmates can begin to feel like a family; which is vital during the ups and downs of university life.

However, as much as you might have in common with people in your flat, it is important to remember that everybody has different cultures, expectations and lifestyles.

This is a quick introduction of what to expect when moving into your first flat:

Communication is KEY:

Communication within a university flat is vital, so it is important to find a way of communication that suits everybody. Whether it be via Facebook or Snapchat, a flat notice board or even email if you felt it worked best, it is important to have this mode of communication established. It is important to remember to remain polite and positive throughout these groups or chats as it is the best way to make your voice heard – without any angry feedback from it!

Washing up rituals:

Everybody eats at different times, and everybody wants to use the kitchen at different times throughout the day and night. So, it is important to make sure to clean up after yourself after you’ve eaten so that there is no build up of pots and pans right next to the sink. Most uni kitchens don’t have a lot of work space so keeping it as clear as possible will help you maximise the space you have available. It also helps to keep it as clean as possible!

Making friends:

Throughout uni it is important to have a good group of friends around you to get you through the hard times. Your flat or house is usually where you make your first group of friends so first impressions really do count. Be friendly and make the effort to go and interact in the social spaces. Sit in the kitchen or living room or do your work at the dining room table so that you can still get your work done but you can be social at the same time.

Music and TV:

Everybody loves a blast of their music occasionally, whether it be in the shower or whilst getting ready to go out – or both if you’re like me! Just remember to be respectful and keep in mind the time of day or night as not everybody will be on the same schedule as you. Some people may be in bed by 9pm and want a bit of peace and quiet.

If you’re organising a flat party, ensure that you make everyone in the building aware of start and potential finish times so that they can make arrangements around it.

Have fun:

Living away from home for the very first time can be very exciting so make sure that you get fully involved. Go and make the effort with your flat mates, go to the socials on campus and make the most of any activities going on around town. The more you throw yourself into the situation the easier it will be to get settled in.
